Nature and Adventure

Located right off the coast of Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is an ideal place for adventure junkies. Whether in the jungle, lagoons, beaches, reefs, nature parks or anywhere in between, in Cozumel you can always find something fun to do.

It is important to highlight that more than 50% of the island is a Natural Protected Area, having 4 Natural Reserves that include 46 acres of its Marine Park and the Forests and Wetlands of Cozumel. These landscapes are home to 31 endemic species, 19 of them are birds, 7 are mammals, 4 invertebrates and a reptile. In addition, Cozumel is part of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program.

Isla Cozumel Mar

In the Heart of the Jungle

Cozumel´s hidden trails are perfect for trekking, biking, ATVing and horseback riding, which will allow you to be in complete touch with nature. At this point you probably already know that Cozumel is one of the top diving destinations in the world, what you probably didn´t know is that it is also one of the best places in the Mexican Caribbean for bird watching, since 224 different bird species have been registered here, 19 of them being endemic, such as the Cozumel Thrasher, the Cozumel Emerald Hummingbird, The Yucatecan tanager and the Yellow Warbler.

Every year, the island receives more than 80 different species of migratory birds that come over on winter, such as the American Nightbird, the Flamingo Chipe, the Cebrita, the Yellow Throated Chipe, the Pink Spatula, the diversity of Canadian Ducks and the Ibis, among others. Bird watching tours take place at the archaeological site of San Gervasio and Punta Sur Park, which has an amazing observation tower. The best season to do this activity is from October to March. Every year, the island hosts a Bird Festival. We recommend that you check our events calendar to find out when it will take place and plan your trip around those dates.

Wildlife Encounters

Interact up close with some of the fascinating species of the island. From May to November you can help liberate sea turtles, or if you prefer to immerse into the depths of the sea, go diving or snorkeling with eagle rays and giant manta rays (from December to March). You can also go looking for crocodiles onboard a swamp boat in Punta Sur around the Colombia Lagoon, which is also the habitat of several birds.
