Beautiful beaches, colorful reefs, the lush Mayan jungle, mystical cenotes, caves and underground rivers are some of the imposing natural scenery that Puerto Morelos possesses, an adventure destination where you can live exciting experiences, whether you travel with your family or friends, and why not? Even with your partner! You just need to choose where you want to start your adventure.
On the Ocean
The National Reef Park of Puerto Morelos is part of the “Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System”, which is the second largest barrier reef in the world.
It is one of the best places in the Mexican Caribbean to scuba dive and snorkel, thanks to its abundant marine life, gentle waves, shallow depth and clear waters. Some of the species that you will be able to see are turtles, manta rays, lobsters, nurse sharks and eels.
Other water activities not to be missed at sea are kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, catamaran tours, among others.
In the Jungle
In the middle of the jungle you will find some nature and adventure parks, where you can perform all kinds of thrilling activities, such as ziplining, bungee jumping, hiking, rappelling, mountain biking, horseback riding and ATV tours through its hidden trails.
You can also book a birdwatching tour, which will take you into the lush jungle to see up close some of the 400 bird species that live here, including Black catbird (Melanoptila glabirostris), Yucatan Vireo (Vireo magister), Yucatan Woodpeacker (Melanerpes pygmaeus), Yucatan Jay (Cyanocorax yucatanicus) and Yucatan flyacatcher (Myarchus yucatanensis).
In this activity you will have a specialized guide with you at all times, who will provide you with binoculars and a digital or paper guide to help you discover that Puerto Morelos is much more than just a beach destination.
The Xibalbá
Considered as sacred places by the Mayans, the tz’onot (cenotes in Spanish) are natural sinkholes of pristine water that are fed by the filtration of the rain and the world's largest underground river system, the Great Mayan Aquifer, located along the Mexican Caribbean.
The Mayas believed that these mystical places were connected to the underworld (Xibalbá in Mayan); where their gods and spirits lived after death. In its caverns you will observe several stalactites and stalagmites.
As part of the Riviera Maya, Puerto Morelos is dotted with 57 cenotes, (but there are over 2,500 cenotes and 407 flooded caves) that are located along its famous Cenotes Route, where you can kayak, paddleboard, zipline, snorkel and dive. Some of the best cenotes in the area are: Cenote Zapote, Siete Bocas, Kin-Há, La Noria, Las Mojarras, Chilam Balam, Verde Lucero and Boca del Puma.
TIP: If you are a certified diver, we recommend you to visit Cenote Zapote, which holds the “Hells Bells”, unique hollowed cone-shaped rock formations that can reach lengths of two meters and an 80-centimeter diameter. This cenote is the only place in the world where these kinds of speleothems have been found.
